Charles McKinney

These guys weren’t passive subjects of history. They were the objects of history. They drove the history in this town.”

The Rhodes College courses of Charles McKinney, Ph.D., include African-American history, African-American intellectual tradition, slavery, and American politics and history. A graduate of Morehouse and Duke universities, he was raised born in Missouri and raised in California before coming South. His academic specialty focuses on the development of the Civil Rights Movement in rural North Carolina, where he served as research associate and program coordinator of the African-American Studies program at Duke before coming to Rhodes. “When we… uncover these stories about amazing men and women who have been traditionally excluded from the dominant narratives, we’ll bump into men like Mr. Nickleberry,” he says. “We’ll see a man who represents this direct link to an amazing time in our history.”
