Michael McKenna

I lose sight of… how hard it is for them outside of school.”

A native of Philadelphia and graduate of Princeton University, Michael McKenna teaches mathematics at the Soulsville Charter School in Memphis. Also credentialed in social studies, he found Mr. Nickleberry’s story left him “in awe” and his students “really moved.” His students actively refute urban stereotypes via their everyday achievements, which often come in spite of serious adversities and a challenging environment. Of the work he and others undertake at Soulsville, he says: “What we’re trying to do is show them that there is something better.”
